Anatomy, Postural Assessment & Problem Solving
FUNDAMENTALS OF ANATOMY
The goal of this two-day workshop is to learn the basic “language” and methodology of human anatomy as the basis for decoding the vastness of the material, as well as your own body! We begin by reviewing the bony landmarks and names of the skeletal structure, as well as the standard anatomical terms, definitions, and actions of the body as our foundation for further learning and application. The major muscular attachments of the pelvis, shoulder, and spine are then explored, as well as the basic biomechanics of the head, neck, spine, hip and shoulder joints, as required to understand their muscles and actions.
Second Wind’s Functional Anatomy workshop is also the pre-requisite course of our Teacher-Training Certification program in Pilates and Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)®.
POSTURAL ASSESSMENT
The goal of this two-day workshop is to learn the basic "language" and methodology of postural analysis and to identify the four postural types found most typically in our human population. Emphasis is on learning how to see, name, and assess posture towards designing simple exercise programs to use with clients towards improving alignment, function and ease of movement.
Topics covered in this workshop include:
- Purpose and Content of a basic assessment
- Standing Assessment of the body – three dimensional view
-
Terminology and Content of our Four Postural Types
-
Neutral Spine Alignment: supine, prone, side-lying, quadruped, and standing
-
Muscular Imbalances associated with the postural types
-
Postural and Phasic muscles & Local and Global muscles, with select Remedial Stretches
-
IMT and Pilates Exercise that address findings towards optimal alignment and function.
SECOND WIND'S POSTURAL BOLSTER SERIES
Improving one's functional alignment, learning how to apply postural information, biomechanics and appropriate exercises through effective cuing, appropriate touch, voice tone, listening skills, and directives form some of the essential skills required to become a great teacher. In this workshop we work with the four-foot long soft foam and/or kapok bolster, blankets and other associated propping in combination with breath integration and coordinated movement patterns to develop a rehabilitative and restorative process that facilitates body awareness and postural change. Second Wind's bolster series is designed to help you open the front, back and sides of the torso and spine, via breath support, intention, accurate positioning, sensorial awareness, and intellectual understanding, leading you gently and effectively towards neutral or natural alignment.
